Serving 104 students, the Arickaree School District is located
in rural Washington County. According to the Census Bureau,
nearly a quarter of all families with children in the district
live in poverty and the district's total bonding capacity
is well below what would be needed to replace its one K-12
school building. Despite this, according to the state's calculus,
the district is not eligible for state school capital grant
monies.
The school building has many problems including a boiler
that needs to be replaced. Last year, the district spent more
than $20,000 in repairs to simply keep the boiler running
through the winter. The district's science facility is in
desperate need of upgrades to match the demands of a modern
curriculum. Currently it does not even have the basic safety
elements -- fume hood, shower, eye wash, etc.
Whenever it rains, water drains into the front doors of
the building. The plumbing system periodically backs up
into the cafeteria, and the roof leaks. The superintendent
and maintenance crews do their best to keep the building
as functional and attractive as possible but the district
is one major system failure away from facing a problem that
couldn't be addressed with local funds.
