DOLORES - (information compiled by Donnell-Kay, October 2006)

The district has a high percent of retirees and very little commerical development so the district property tax burden falls primarily on residents (many of whom are on a fixed income). Despite having urgent repair and renovation needs in its schools, the district has not passed a bond measure for schools in more than 10 years.

Currently, the district would desperatedly like to replace its shared science building, which has serious health and safety needs. The elementary and middle schools have defunct heating systems that need to be replaced. The walls are cracked and crumbling and the entire campus (all buildings) is located on an old river bed. As a result, the buildings flood periodically in the spring. The district's administrative building -- a 25-30-year-old "temporary" structure--is infested with mice and has significant mold contamination, both issues that pose serious health threats to district employees.
