At the start of the 2007-2008 school year, the North Park
school district integrated its elementary school with it junior-senior
high. The school district has a declining school enrollment
and by eliminating the elementary school the district will
save $200,000 annually.
But the district’s kitchen and cafeteria are located
in a building near the elementary school. Located atop a hill,
approximately a block away from the school, all students and
staff now have to walk to the cafeteria. In the wintertime,
the hill between the elementary doubles as the local sledding
hill.
The school district received a grant to build a new cafeteria,
but the district still needs $100,000 to finish the cafeteria,
which is slated for completion by early December.
Built in 1964, the school has its original boilers, which
only operate at 60% efficiency. Replacing the boilers with
more efficient ones would cost more than $200,000. Located
in Walden, one of the state’s coldest regions, the district
would also like to build a bus barn.
But with a declining enrollment and an economy based on agriculture
and tourism, county residents are unlikely or unable to pass
a bond measure.
